Achieving a balanced life is significantly easier said than done, especially for those with intensive, life-consuming jobs. No one knows the importance of balance more than nurses. With the busy and often unpredictable lives they live, it’s easy to get overwhelmed and begin to think balance isn’t as important as you once thought. However, without balance, you could be harming yourself, preventing you from fully embracing the superhuman nurse that you could be.
The most important aspect of living a balanced life as a nurse is to make time for yourself, despite the array of responsibilities that pressure you now. Including time carved out of your schedule specifically for your own needs is so worth it. Make sure to schedule time each week to de-stress. Get up a few minutes early in the morning to savor your coffee and mentally prepare yourself for the day.
To help ensure you not only have a healthy mind, but also a healthy body: plan your menu for the week the weekend before and spend one afternoon buying all the groceries you need. Make sure to buy fresh produce and keep it prepared, front-and-center in the fridge so you can easily grab them on the go. Having that system in place will make the temptation to order take out or grab a package of cookies easier to resist.
Similarly, instead of powering through your lunch or dinner while on duty with a million other thoughts racing through
your head, spend those few short minutes mentally detoxing. Taking a quick walk around the block to clear your head or reading a chapter of a book while you eat will do wonders for your mental health. This ensures you’re focused and sharp when you return to your patients.
You can also take advantage of technology to help you streamline your life. There’s always an app for whatever organizational purpose you need. Find applications and programs that can help you to keep track of your to-do list in the easiest, most efficient way possible.
And finally: don’t forget to enjoy life and take a few minutes each day to laugh. Not only is it great for your outlook on life, but it is also proven to alleviate stress, fight off infections, boost brain health, and lower blood pressure.
