Here are some quick guidelines to get you started taking photos, examples of good pics and some that could be better.

There are also excellent point-and-shoot (compact cameras) on the market, such as the Sony CyberShot or the Canon PowerShot.
Occasionally, you can use a cell phone. Even with all the technology packed inside new iPhones, the sensor's surface size will never be large enough to render a smooth image.
NO SELFIES PLEASE! Scratch that. Use plenty of selfies and tag us in your stories! We will share them in our stories. As for submissions, ask for a hand or use a tripod.
Keep your environment relatable to the medical field. Find a simple background in an inspiring location.
